An open architecture magazine with a concrete stair photo beside two closed issues in graphite and acid lime

Brief: Make a 196 page magazine that people keep on the shelf instead of the recycling bin.
Role: Art direction, editorial grid, cover system for four issues
Year: 2024
Outcome: Subscriptions up from 1,900 to 3,400 over the four redesigned issues

Konvoi had good writing and a template that made every page look like the last. We rebuilt it on a 15 column grid: long reads take 5 columns, photo essays take all 15, and the two never share a spread.

Covers are a single colour and a thick black bar. On the shelf the spines form a stripe that changes with every issue, and readers started posting their stacks.

Process note

We set the whole of issue 31 twice, once on the old template and once on the new grid, and asked eight subscribers to read both. Seven finished the long read on the new grid; three did on the old one.
